Working Dog Rescue Program
Created and Led by Alyssa Smith, this program focuses on finding specific breeds with high drive and untapped potential in other shelters, rescues, or at animal control and giving them a life with a purpose, one which their breed was designed for.
Alyssa's Story & More About the Program
Alyssa graduated from Kennelwood Academy for Professional Dog Trainers.
She is a current handler of a certified Human Remains Detection (HRD) dog and serves as an active volunteer member of a Search & Rescue (SAR) team, contributing to real-world missions and ongoing professional training in scent detection and field deployment.
She brings a strong foundation in canine behavior, obedience, and advanced training techniques to this initiative.
With her years of experience, she specializes in identifying dogs suited for working roles and guides them through structured, goal-focused training programs.
Under her leadership, our program will rescue dogs from shelters and animal control facilities as well as transfer from other rescues and prepare those dogs for careers in:
-
Search and Rescue
-
Scent Detection
-
Other specialized working dog fields
Alyssa works closely with our foster families, adopters, and partner organizations to ensure each dog is not only trained, but placed in an environment where they can thrive.
These dogs are NOT broken - they are just waiting for the right path. At Spencer Pet Rescue, we don't just rescue dogs. We train them, we believe in them, and give them the job they were born to do.
