I found a stray dog/cat

First of all, THANK YOU! Thank you for being such a great person who took in a stray.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Is the animal in need of medical attention?

   1. If yes, go straight to your local Animal Control or any open shelter. DO NOT go to a veterinarian or you will be asked to pay for the care received. ​

   2. If no, follow these steps:

2. Contact Animal Control for your city/county

   1. Animal Control may tell you that they are full. Ask to be put on a wait list. ​

   2. Go to their website and follow the links for reporting that you found a stray. The finding of the pet needs to be documented.

3. Walk the neighborhood where the pet was found and knock on doors. The chances are that the pet isn't too far from home. ​

4. Make flyers and pass them out in that same neighborhood. 

5. Post all over social media!!!! There are several Facebook groups of lost and found pets. Find those for your area and post there. Also post in any community groups for your area as well.

6. Can you hold on to the pet temporarily while you wait for a spot at animal control?

   1. If yes, great, you're amazing! You've saved a poor baby and are keeping it safe while waiting for help.​

   2. If no, contact your local SHELTERS, such as humane societies and any place you know that has a physical building. Do your research and put the foster-based rescues last. Spencer Pet Rescue is foster-based; we are not the same thing as Spencer Kennel.

   3. Many shelters will tell you that they are full --- ask to be put on a wait list or if any of their fosters would be available.
